New year’s is as indicated the first day of the year. Because of that we are all filled with many strong feelings, hope and happiness for the new year. We for sure have great expectations for the holiday dinner too though. Whether we are the ones hosting or attending such a dinner, we are all excited for the amazing smell and the overabundant number of dishes on the table.
We usually don’t know which recipes to choose as the ideas are endless and delicious. It depends from when we will be hosting, New Year’s Eve or day (that’s what’s the usual in Greece). Also, very important is the number and composition of our guests (are there going to be kids at the table, elderly, vegetarians etc.). Lastly, we need to decide form the beginning if we are going to prepare a bouffe where people can serve themselves or whether we are serving a set menu on the table and as the tradition here in Greece says, whether we are preparing breakfast for the morning too or not.
Let’s take it from the start though. I suggest that you start with scheduling your dinner and deciding on a date and time. Then decide how many people you are inviting, make a list and start making calls. Once you are sure for the number attending you can start organizing your menu.
After you decide on your dishes, you can think of decorations too (candles, lights, Christmas ornaments etc.). After you are done, note down all you don’t already have and will need to purchase. A very polite move would also be to prepare little meaningful gifts for everyone. Keep notes for these too and make sure that you have all you need at least a week before the big day so that you are prepared for anything unexpected that might happen. This way you can focus completely on your cooking.
A really important reason for you to have all of these practical things ready beforehand, is that you will be less stressed and tired, have a clear head and enjoy the process a lot more than you would otherwise.
