Corfu, Corfu! – Part 1

Pontikonisi, Achillion, pastitsada, sofrito are just a few words that come to mind when I think of the island of the Phaeacians. That is, Corfu.

Having already visited the island three times, I think an article on the blog about it is, if anything, necessary.

In case you haven’t visited Corfu before, I am here to sugeest to you all the must visit destinations and of course the must eat traditional foods.

Starting with the sights, the first thing I would suggest you do is taking a walk in the Old Town. There, you will tour the famous alleyways, you will find the famous Liston, but also the square of Spianada. An exploration of the Old Fortress (or else Fortezza) is also necessary, since it is located a stone’s throw from the Old Town.

Of course, excursions outside the city are equally necessary. For this I suggest you visit as many beaches as you can (North and South the island), especially if you’re visiting during the summer. Also, a visit to Achillion and Pontikonisi is definitely worth it!

As far as food is concerned, I must tell you that Corfu is an island that famous for its delicious and traditional cuisine. One of the top dishes you should try is definitely the notorious Pastitsada! It is a spaghetti with thick pasta, which is simmered for hours, along with spices, sweet wine and rooster or beef (to die for). The second dish is “sofrito”. Corfiot sofrito is fried slices of beef, which are cooked with a mixture of vinegar, garlic and parsley. Yam Yam! Finally, third on my list is the “bourdeto”.

As you understand, I can continue my list of many more favorite foods, but I will probably do it in a Part 2! I certainly have a lot more to tell you about this island, but I think that, for a start, everything I have told you is quite informative! See you soon!
